BERLIN (AP) — A college student in Berlin beat a Jewish classmate until he was hospitalized after the two got into an argument Friday night about the Israel-Hamas conflict, police said. The 30-year-old Jewish student was out with an acquaintance in Berlin’s Mitte neighborhood shortly before midnight on Friday when he encountered a 23-year-old fellow student from the university. The two students — the 23-year-old, who held strong pro-Palestinian views, and the 30-year-old Jewish student, who had posted pro-Israel views on social media — got into a heated discussion. As the argument escalated, the 23-year-old repeatedly punched the 30-year-old in the face until he fell to the ground, police said. The suspect kicked the older student while he was lying on the ground, then fled the scene.

A similar split appeared to be present among the senators, based on their votes on the pretrial motions to dismiss on Tuesday. The rest were mixed, but a two-thirds majority supported the trial, suggesting a desire to hear the evidence. REUTERS/Denis Balibouse//File PhotoBERN, July 13 (Reuters) - A Swiss parliamentary investigation into the role played by state institutions in the collapse and emergency rescue of Switzerland's second biggest lender Credit Suisse will take 12 to 14 months to complete, its president said on Thursday. The investigation committee is Swiss lawmakers' most powerful tool and this is only the fifth time such a parliamentary probe has been launched. It will also examine the role played by financial regulator FINMA as well as the Swiss National Bank. UBS (UBSG.S) agreed to buy Credit Suisse for 3 billion Swiss francs ($3.48 billion) in March after panicked customers withdrew cash from their accounts at the stricken lender.

ZURICH, July 11 (Reuters) - A rare Swiss parliamentary investigation due to start this week aims to establish what went wrong before the dramatic fall of Credit Suisse, once Switzerland's second biggest bank. It was apparent that Credit Suisse was in difficulties over the last two years after a string of scandals, with customers withdrawing money on a massive scale at the end of 2022. Could the central bank have done more, for example by promising Credit Suisse unlimited liquidity to reassure customers and stem the outflow of funds? It is unclear whether Credit Suisse and UBS executives are obliged to appear if asked, but they are expected to do so due to intense political and public pressure. POSSIBLE OUTCOMESWhile some experts have said the inquiry offers the Swiss authorities an opportunity to redeem themselves, others have warned it could simply become political theatre.

One of the EU's key aims is to deliver more timely and equitable patient access to medicines across the 27-nation bloc. The group also found 92% of "innovative medicines" were available in Germany, compared with 30% in smaller and Eastern European EU member states. Companies can extend it up to 10 years if they launch the drug in all 27 EU member states within two years. However, pharmaceutical firms and lobby groups say the move could hamper innovation and the overall availability of drugs.

Berlin, Feb 23 (Reuters) - Activists protesting against Russia's invasion of Ukraine parked a destroyed, rusty tank directly in front of the Russian embassy in Berlin on Friday, bringing a piece of the battlefield to the centre of the German capital. The Russian embassy was not available for comment. They said it was transferred to Germany with the help of the Ukrainian Defence Ministry and the Ukrainian National Museum of Military History. The district office of Berlin's Mitte borough rejected Lenze's and Giebel's application to display the tank last year, citing concerns including road safety. The tank will subsequently tour through Europe and may end up in a German tank museum.
